I’ll agree it was somewhat odd, but I’m not sure I’d go so far to say the character didn’t need to be here. For the same reasons you cite, I won’t name the character. But given this character’s role in the Empire in A New Hope, this movie either had to feature said character or explain why they weren’t present in the prequel story. Or am I completely off base in saying that?
